Anagram­matiquement métamorphosé en « Luis d’Herdy » en 1899, il publie alors, au tournant du siècle, quelques talentueux romans et recueils poétiques, fortement marqués par l’homosexualité et l’inspiration décadente. En témoigne L’Homme Sirène (1899), mais également Monsieur Antinoüs et Madame Sapho (1899), qui présente la particularité de mettre en scène, à parts égales, homosexualités féminine et masculine. Monsieur Antinoüs et Madame Sapho, écrit dans une langue orfévrée et dans un style artiste, paraît, plus d’un siècle après sa publication, d’une rare modernité. Outre la liberté de moeurs érotiques et sentimentales revendiquée par l’auteur, le projet de mariage qui s’y délivre conjugue audace et bon sens.

Honderd jaar na de dood van Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is het hoog tijd om het cliché van de wereldvreemde dandy die ellenlange zinnen schreef naar het rijk der fabelen te verwijzen. In 'De tijdmachine van Marcel Proust' maken we kennis met de andere Proust: humorvol, erudiet, en sterk betrokken bij actuele culturele, sociale en politieke ontwikkelingen. Aan de hand van zijn zevendelige meesterwerk 'Op zoek naar de verloren tijd' trekt emeritus hoogleraar Ieme van der Poel een relevante parallel tussen de belle époque en onze eigen tijd. Ook de personages van Proust geven zich over aan de rage om te sporten in het groen, en verdiepen zich in de vraag naar de complexiteit van seksuele geaardheid. Net als de schrijver zelf omarmen ze de verworvenheden van de moderne tijd. Proust slaagt erin om de fictionele werkelijkheid die hij schiep uit te tillen boven haar historische kader. Proust, de woordkunstenaar, maakte ons een eeuw geleden al duidelijk dat taal niet onschuldig is en in het uiterste geval kan leiden tot uitsluiting en raciaal geweld.

samenvatting: This dissertation focuses on the literary oeuvre of Olha Kobylianska (1863-1942) - one of the most sophisticated Ukrainian prose writers in contemporary Ukrainian literature, and one of the most paradoxical intellectuals in the European fin-de-siècle, who started as a German writer, but eventually devoted her life's work to modernizing Ukrainian literature. The study investigates the complex evolution and the dialogical nature of the multiplicity of socio-political discourses - particularly feminism, populism, socialism, Nietzscheanism, elitism, Marxism, Bolshevism, nationalism, and Fascism - in Kobylianska's writings. Building upon contemporary literary and social theories - in particular, works by Freud, Bakhtin, Hroch, and Hermans - this dissertation argues that Kobylianska's complex dialogue with the diverse socio-cultural and political movements that sprang up in Europe at the turn of the twentieth century is representative of her socio-historical milieu. By placing Kobylianska's writings within the matrix of the European fin-de-siècle and interwar period, the study thus not only re-defines Kobylianska's engagement with the political, social, artistic, and philosophical contexts of her tumultuous times, but also provides insight into the struggle of the fin-de-siècle generation of European intellectuals to articulate and assert an individual voice amidst the multiplicity of mass ideologies of their time.
